The Battle of New Orleans was significant because it was the biggest part of the American Revolution for the United States. Andrew Jackson and his untrained army outsmarted the British, causing them to retreat and in result stopping the British from capturing New Orleans. The Battle of New Orleans was also important because it was the last major battle of the War of 1812. Andrew Jackson, America’s General who led the war, would be known as an American hero after this war. General Jackson heard about the British advancing towards New Orleans and he felt like he needed to save New Orleans. On January 8, 1815, American forces, under Major General Jackson, defeated the British forces trying to capture New Orleans. The battle, which takes place after the treaty of Ghent has been signed, was the most successful American victory of the war. The British chose New Orleans as their major objective, because of different reasons. One being they hoped they could separate Louisiana from the rest of the United States, also wanting control of the Mississippi river valley. Ten years ago, people assumed that all high school graduates will go to college, but yet today, far more number of people do not attend college than it was anticipated a decade ago. Why? Whilst A Sentimental Journey was written in 1768, and thus belongs to the post-modernist genre, The Magic Toyshop was written in 1967, and would thus be influential to post-modernist and modernist writers alike (as we indeed know Laurence Sterne was). Devices used by the authors to portray the love within include form, structure and language and their differences and similarities with these aspects serve to emphasise the different types of love evident. The form and structure of both pieces differs in many places. The first person narrative of A Sentimental Journey true to its name, in many respects, walks the reader through, a journey with the writer and their feelings of forbidden passion. Stream of consciousness as a form of story-telling is evident throughout, with fragmented punctuation as tension builds I was going to accept it but I durst not I have nothing, my dear and as the dialogue is recounted. These feelings of doubt and worry shown in the broken clauses within sentences are reflective of the time, social etiquette forbid sexual relations prior to marriage and relationships with significant class difference between a maid and a clergyman. The kiss Melanie experiences, her first kiss, does not live up to her expectations. However even Melanie herself admits from a distance it could appear romantic, if she in the moment thought this was not the case. She wished someone was watching them to appreciate them, or that herself was watching them, Finn kissing this black haired young girl. Language is another factor used to show love in the extracts. The Magic Toyshops language, because it is from Melanies point of view and is incredibly superficial. In this situation, where we expect the stress to be placed on her thoughts and feelings (it is, after all, her first kiss) she chooses to focus on the way she and Finn must look. The change in her language to her feelings only begins to change when Finn inserted his tongue between her lips and she is immediately begins to beat him away. Convulsed with horror. This emphasis on Melanies superficiality may not only be due to her superficial personality but from the detached feel we get the impression of from the recount of this event. Remotely, anybody both these words imply the detached emotions Melanie is feeling in this situation. Perhaps this, then, is the explanation of the absence of her emotions in the extract. This contrasts with the highly significant mention of emotions throughout A Sentimental Journey, but we of course expect this due to the first person narrative seen. After Yorick so desperately yearns for the fille de chambre in A Sentimental Journey, he does not submit to his temptation, and instead ends their encounter in a polite and acceptable way. I pressed my lips to her cheek, and taking her by the hand again, led her safe to the gate of the hotel. Equally so in A Magic Toyshop after all the struggling and commotion, Finn simply prised off his bubble-gum, examined it for impurities and put it back in his mouth. The casual manner in both extracts serves to undermine the love we see in the extracts. With such casual endings, could the emotions felt in the pieces really be classed as love at all?

For far too many years, gifted learners were only thought to be the achievers in the group. Those students that were able to excel in whatever assignment was given or any task at hand were generally those identified as the gifted and talented in the group. This paper implies that this belief continues to be widely held. Those in teacher training are required to perform a given number of hours of observation in a mentor teacher's classroom prior to the completion of their program. Without adequate training in the identification of internally motivated behavior, this writer concludes that many of the teacher-identified gifted students would be missed. From the author's perspective, most of the pre-teachers doing the observations in this paper identified the teacher-pleasers as the intrinsically motivated in the classroom. Usually this type of student is most responsive to extrinsic motivation, according to the author. Future teachers need to be trained to recognize the nonconformist gifted learner as well. Too often these students are allowed to fall between the cracks because their true intrinsic motivation is never identified. They are usually labeled early on as a troublemaker or as rowdy. Failure to identify those students that only faintly demonstrate characteristics of giftedness can lead to continual classroom disruptions and the loss of potential for the student. I could not agree more strongly with the author. Having taught several vocational science classes in local high schools, I have met many students that are indeed gifted but are nonconforming holding little regard for those that do not seek to understand them on a personal level. There are many strong young minds lost every year because teachers and other professionals are not adequately trained or equipped to identify and differentiate curriculum for these underground students. According to the author characteristics of the intrinsically motivated student include: students that accept challenges willingly, those that show persistence in difficult tasks, those who exhibit curiosity, remain task-committed, and reflect satisfaction in their own efforts despite the opinion of others. The author sees this motivation as fueled by students' psychoacademic needs to control their own decisions. These students, almost by their very nature, do not exhibit the teacher pleasing characteristics so often identified with the gifted student. In fact, the author sites research indicating that extrinsic rewards (teacher pleasing) can be devastating to the intrinsically motivated student. This system lessens the ability of the child to learn and work for the satisfaction therein. The author feels these students can lose their perceived power over their decisions much more quickly than the average learner can. Oneness of God and of humanity Islam teaches that there is only one God. According to Muslims, God may be called by many names, but all the attributes assigned to those different names only make up the totality of the One God who created the universe. Death Comes for the Archbishop: Not a Novel If someone felt compelled to classify Death Comes for the Archbishop as a type of novel, the most likely candidate would be a regional novel. Clearly, the setting and local color of this work make the region a critical component. However, before classifying the work as a type of novel, it must be determined whether it is a novel or, as Miss Cather has asserted, a narrative. Based on the structure and content of the book, it does not meet the classical definitions of novel and plot, so would lend itself more accurately to Miss Cather's classification. The simplified definition of novel given in A Handbook to Literature is "an extended fictional PROSE narrative" (335). By this definition, Cather's book would qualify as a novel. But there is a great deal more to a novel than this definition implies. The handbook expands by stating: "some organizing principle-PLOT, THEME, or idea-should be present in a . . . a novel" (335). Cather's book has an idea - to illustrate the historical, regional and cultural context in which two European priests perform missionary work in the desert of the American Southwest in the last half of the nineteenth century. This idea does not constitute a plot. Aristotle maintained that a plot should create a whole with "the structural union of the parts being such that, if any one of them is displaced or removed, the whole will be disjointed and disturbed" (Holman/Harmon 377). The structure of Death Comes for the Archbishop is made up of a series of episodes consisting of the experiences of two missionary priests, and legends of the region, such as Our Lady of Guadalupe. Would the whole become "disjointed or disturbed" if some of the stories or legends were removed or rearranged? No. The work would lose some of its richness, but the whole would not become incomprehensible. I believe Willa Cather perceived this work as a narrative rather than a novel because it lacked what is traditionally considered a plot. The work's narrative form is reminiscent of a journal, and had it been written in the first person instead of third, it probably would have been classified as a journal narrative rather than a novel.

John Steinbeck’s, Of Mice and Men, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, share a theme of dehumanization. Dehumanization is portrayed through two opposite social classes, the wealthy and the working class, and the ways in which women are treated by men.Of Mice and Men is a novel about George and Lennie, two migrant farmers, who have been hired to work at a farm after being chased out of their last job. The Great Gatsby is concerned with its protagonist, Jay Gatsby, and his devotion to rising into the upper class to impress Daisy Buchanan who left him because he was poor.In the end, characters from both novels are either dehumanized due to their class or because of their gender. Throughout Of Mice and Men, the wealthy upper class dehumanizes the lower working class by manipulating and taking advantage of them.Curley's wife lives a life in luxury on the farm with no work and plenty of free time. She wanders around the farm claiming that she is looking for her husba nd, but in reality she is exerting her power over the workers. When Crooks, one of the workers, talks back to Curley's wife, she threatens, â€Å"I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny† (Steinbeck 79).Steinbeck emphasizes that she could not only have him falsely condemned, but doing so would be no trouble at all. Crooks then, â€Å"reduces himself to nothing† and replies, â€Å"Yes, ma'am† with a â€Å"toneless† voice because he knows that it is true. Steinbeck's diction further advocates the theme of dehumanization, particularly when he describes Crooks' voice as â€Å"toneless†.Crooks' monotonous response indicates that he has accepted his role as unimportant and voiceless. Instead of then walking away, Curley's wife continues to take advantage of his inferiority by â€Å"waiting for him to move so that she could whip at him again†.This short exchange demonstrates how the rich gain satisfaction from abusing the hel pless. Earlier in the story, George, Lennie, and Candy, another planter, decide to pool their savings together in order to purchase a farm and be their own bosses. At the end of their conversation, George wisely adds, â€Å"Don’t tell nobody about it, Jus’ us three an’ nobody else.They li’ble to can us so we can’t make no stake† (60), George understands that if their current boss discovered the plan they composed, he would take advantage of the high dependence they have on their next pay checks and fire them.The wealthy class will do whatever it takes to prevent the impoverished from becoming prosperous. On the other hand, in Of Mice of Men, Curley's wife can also be the victim of dehumanization rather than the oppressor. She is often portrayed as a metaphor for problems in the story because she is a woman.Steinbeck expresses this by purposely not giving her a name. Her only identifier is her marriage to Curley, whom she rarely talks to. Tha t identifier is a large reason for why George loathes her. When George and Lennie first meet Curley's wife, George refers to her as â€Å"poison†, a â€Å"piece of jail bait†, and a â€Å"rattrap† (32).He utilizes words that compare her to inanimate objects of disdain that give the sense that she is not a lady or even an actual person, but again a metaphor for problems. In addition, George commands Lennie to â€Å"let Curley take the rap† rather than ordering Lennie not to go after Curley's wife.George uses the word â€Å"let† because no one looks for trouble with Curley's wife, but some one has to tolerate her and that unfortunate soul, in George's eyes, should be Curley. Then when Lennie accidentally kills her, the main concern is not her, but how to keep Lennie from getting in trouble.Anything that is tied to Curley's wife can only mean danger. Similarly, The Great Gatsby contains multiple examples of the wealthy dehumanizing the poor. When Nick , the narrator, and Tom Buchanan, Daisy's husband, visit the valley of ashes to see Tom's mistress, Myrtle, they also encounter Myrtle's husband, George Wilson, a poor car mechanic.George inquires when Tom will be selling him a car with a tone of desperation in his voice. Tom, sensing this desperation, threatens to â€Å"sell it somewhere else after all† (Fitzgerald 25). George quickly tries to take it back but his voice fades off with submission.Fitzgerald effectively chooses the words â€Å"faded off† to characterize George's reply because like Crooks in Of Mice and Men, it supports the notion that some of the lower class workers recognize that arguing back with the upper class is useless.It is apparent that Tom enjoys dangling this sale over him because George is depending on it. Later in the novel when Nick and Daisy are visiting Gatsby's house, Gatsby calls his servant, Klipspringer, over to play them some music. When the servant walks in, Nick immediately notices that Gatsby had him change his attire to make him look more presentable for Daisy.Klipspringer explains that he was sleeping but Gatsby interrupts to ask him if he plays the piano and then interrupts him again when Mr. Klipspringer tries to admit that he is out of practice. Gatsby commands that he not â€Å"talk so much† and just play (95).Gatsby's request that he not â€Å"talk so much† connects back to the voiceless characteristic that Crooks in Of Mice and Men understands to pertain to himself. In this short conversation, Gatsby is attempting to help Klipspringer understand that this characteristic pertains to him as well by not allowing him to finish a single sentence.Much like Of Mice and Men, in The Great Gatsby women are dehumanized to unimportant and frequently ignored roles. When Gatsby and Tom Buchanan have their altercation on the subject of Daisy, she tries to add in her own opinion â€Å"with a visible effort†, crying out that she â€Å"won't stan d this! † and begs to leave (133).However, both of these remarks are completely ignored with no response from anyone. Fitzgerald emphasizes that Daisy is being ignored by having her cry out opinions â€Å"with a visible effort† and then following that with a response that makes it appear as if no one even hears her.Later in the novel, Wilson starts to go insane and treats Myrtle inhumanely. When his neighbor hears a loud disturbance coming from Wilson's house, Wilson calmly explains to him that it is just his â€Å"wife locked up there† (137).Wilson is treating her more like an animal than a human being. In the next sequence, Myrtle is hit by an oncoming car that ends her â€Å"tremendous vitality†. It is very ironic that in the end, Myrtle dies when she was so full of life, yet Daisy will continue her life as an insignificant and overlooked wife.In the passage illustrating her death, Fitzgerald forcefully uses pronouns to describe Myrtle's mangled body to suggest that â€Å"she† is just another poor girl from the valley of ashes whose death will create little impact on the world.In Of Mice and Men, Curley's wife finds it remarkably effortless to threaten the farmers because of their low position on the farm's hierarchy. However, it is just as easy for her to become the victim of dehumanization being that she is a woman. Events and Accomplishments of Ronald Reagan’s Presidency: Soon after Reagan took office, an assassination attempt was made on his life. His Press Secretary James Brady, policeman Thomas Delahanty, and Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy were also all hit. As seen, there are many different ways of going about the situation of killing someone through Euthanasia. Seeing these methods, we know that there is some consent to whether the patient can choose to die and such, but its all about whether the doctor should be allowed to perform the act. All in all, its highly unethical for a doctor to participate in such an activity and help someone die when they should by all means be trying to save their life.
